Latin American newsroom covers ISOJ 2023 in Spanish, expanding conference’s reach in the Americas

The International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ) brings together journalists from all over the world, whether they attend in person or virtually.

A prime example of this is coverage of ISOJ 2023 carried out by members of CONNECTASHub, a regional newsroom of more than 136 journalists working in 19 Latin American countries.

The CONNECTASHub members, writing from the Dominican Republic to Venezuela, produced 12 articles in Spanish that covered both the 24th ISOJ and its companion gathering, the 16th Ibero-American Colloquium on Digital Journalism, a meeting for journalists from Latin America, Spain and Portugal that traditionally takes place following ISOJ.

The effort was coordinated by Carlos Eduardo Huertas, founder and director of CONNECTAS, a transnational collaborative journalism center for Latin America, based in Bogotá, Colombia.

“We are extremely grateful to Carlos Eduardo, his team and the CONNECTASHub journalists spread throughout the hemisphere. Their special reporting project enhanced the impact of ISOJ in Latin America,” said Professor Rosental Alves, director of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas and founder of ISOJ.

ISOJ 2023 took place from April 14 to 15 at the AT&T Hotel and Conference Center on the University of Texas at Austin campus. The major sponsors of the conference were Knight Foundation and Google News Initiative. ISOJ was also supported by UT’s Moody College of Communication, Univision Noticias, Newspack by Automattic, and the Content Authenticity Initiative.

ISOJ featured 76 speakers from 18 countries and 20 hours of programming! That’s 23 sessions, including 10 panels, four keynote presentations and six workshops.

ISOJ 2023 featured keynote speakers, including: Joseph Kahn, executive editor at The New York Times; Janelle Rodriguez, executive vice president, NBC News; Jon Kelly, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Puck; and Yusuf Omar, co-founder of Seen.tv (based in Australia and several other countries).

At least 380 people from 29 countries were in attendance in Austin, while 809 virtual registrants representing 89 countries were able to attend online. The conference offered more than simple video streaming, allowing for more engagement of remote attendees.

ISOJ began in 1999 and has been organized by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at UT Austin’s Moody College of Communication. The goal of this annual conference is to discuss the impact of the digital revolution on journalism. ISOJ bridges the gap between academia and the news industry with the participation of journalists, media executives and scholars from around the world.

During ISOJ 2023, speakers addressed topics like the impact of generative artificial intelligence on journalism, sustainability of local news, covering the climate crisis, reporting from exile, building successful journalism business models, combating misinformation, and more.

For the ninth year, ISOJ featured simultaneous interpretation to Spanish, thanks to support from Univision Noticias. This allows for increased participation by attendees from Spanish-speaking countries.

ISOJ 2023 was a truly hybrid conference. In addition to the traditional live video streaming of panels and workshops, there were Meet and Greet sessions to give remote attendees opportunities to have direct conversations with speakers, via video-conference.

Remote attendees also had a chance to talk to each other through Shindig, a virtual conference platform, which gave them the capability of creating video-chat rooms, replicating the networking experience of an in-person conference in the virtual environment.

The recordings of individual sessions of ISOJ were quickly edited and posted on YouTube as another perk for remote attendees of the conference. This new feature of ISOJ helped remote attendees who could not watch the sessions live, but wanted to catch up on the same day. This was especially important, considering that there were remote attendees from all time zones around the world.

ISOJ also recognizes and pioneers research in online journalism as the conference coincides with the publication of #ISOJthe official research journal for the symposium. It features peer-reviewed articles based on original research into online journalism. Authors selected in a competitive blind review process are invited to present their findings at the symposium during a special research panel. The top paper award for ISOJ 2023 went to authors Ayleen Cabas-Mijares, Joy Jenkins and Laura Nootbaar for their paper “‘News you can use’: Pragmatic solidarity as a news value in online community journalism.”

In addition to the main programming of ISOJ, the Knight Center organized the pre-conference event “The Crisis of Rural Journalism in America,” which featured a screening of the documentary “For the Record” and a panel discussion on the topic. The pre-ISOJ event was sponsored by the Rural Journalism Pipeline Project at UT Austin’s IC2 Institute and the Moody College School of Journalism and Media.

And per tradition, the 16th Ibero-American Colloquium on Digital Journalism took place on the Sunday following ISOJ, attracting about 50 in-person attendees from Latin America, Spain, Portugal, and the U.S. It also garnered 500 unique viewers online. This annual meeting discusses press freedom and innovation in online journalism in the region.

He co-founded SEEN, an international media company that champions storytelling and community-building through mobile journalism and the use of smartphones or wearable cameras.

Thousands of short-form videos have been produced and published under the SEEN banner, netting over 1 billion views in 2021.

Omar will deliver a keynote session at ISOJ 2023, which will be moderated by Robert Hernandez, professor of professional practice at University of Southern California.

“The future of storytelling on your face” will be held from 1:15 p.m. to 2 p.m. U.S. Central Time on Saturday, April 15. Sign up today to watch this keynote either online or in person from Austin, Texas!

Omar Keynote

Omar noted that interactive features based on augmented reality – face filters and lenses commonly found on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok for example – “are how young people express themselves.”

“We see it as a powerful storytelling tool to help citizens create professional-quality video content with their phones,” he said. “That’s what SEEN does, we use AR to turn citizens into journalists.”

Omar said that attendees of the keynote can learn that “they can do everything with nothing,” highlighting how content driven by engagement can create powerful stories and platforms.

“They can create thousands of videos which they can monetize and reach billions of views and millions of people without spending any money on fancy equipment,” he said. “They can create digital media strategies not just for today, but with the infrastructure that will have them well-positioned for the next five years.”

At the 24th International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ), which takes place this week from April 14 to 15, experts in political mis- and disinformation, as well as journalists who have been on the receiving end of political lies, will convene for a special panel.

“Lying in politics, weaponizing fake news and attacking journalists: What have we learned so far and how to react to the infodemic?” is happening on Friday, April 14, at 4:45 p.m. U.S. Central Time.

Twitter Infodemia Panel ENG-2

There’s still time to register for ISOJ and join us in person or virtually, however, registration will close soon.

Chair Anya Schiffrin, director of the technology and media specialization at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, will be joined by:

  • Bill Adair, founder of PolitiFact and Knight Professor of Journalism and Public Policy at Duke University. He researches fact-checking at Duke’s Reporters’ Lab and is writing a book on lying in politics.
  • Sérgio Dávila, editor-in-chief of Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo. Journalists at the publication were targeted by former President Jair Bolsonaro, who also threatened to cancel all government subscriptions to the newspaper.
  • Khaya Himmelman, reporter for The Messenger. She focuses on misinformation, particularly political misinformation.
  • Glenn Kessler, editor and chief writer for The Washington Post’s Fact Checker. He has held that role since 2011 and is a pioneer of political fact-checking.

“It’s no secret that around the world many politicians have used journalists as a scapegoat and attacked the media,” Schiffrin said. “[Former U.S. President] Trump, [Indian Prime Minister Narendra] Modi, [former Brazilian President Jair] Bolsonaro are extreme examples. This has created a climate of mistrust and the feeling that it’s acceptable to attack journalists.”

That dangerous environment exists alongside the spread of mis- and disinformation. So, how to solve it?

“There are a number of different ways to address the problems of online/mis disinformation. I use a simple framework: supply and demand,” said Schiffrin, who recently authored a report for the German Marshall Fund, “AI Startups and the Fight Against Mis/disinformation Online: An Update.”

“Demand-side solutions emphasize the role of the consumer while supply-side solutions emphasize the supply of information,” she continued.

Schiffrin breaks down supply-side solutions into two parts: suppressing poor quality/dangerous or illegal information and creating and/or promoting high-quality information such as quality journalism.

On the demand side of things, she emphasizes efforts to teach media literacy, the promotion of community engagement and verification efforts, like labeling and fact checking.

To continue this conversation, join Schiffrin and an esteemed group of panelists for this important conversation on how journalists can react to the infodemic. There’s still time to register for ISOJ, so sign up today!

And more than that, they’re learning ways to combat it.

The 24th International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ) will feature a special announcement from the Disarming Disinformation program, launched this year by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), with support from the Scripps Howard Foundation.

On Friday, April 14, at 12:10 p.m. U.S. Central Time, Cristina Tardáguila, senior program director at ICFJ, will explain how a group of 20 journalists traveled to Austin prior to ISOJ to participate in a 48-hour investigative marathon – an “Investigathon” – as part of the Disarming Disinformation program.

ICFJ Disarming Disinformation Announcement

Participants, selected in recent months, aim to discover (and reveal) the players behind the financing of the most diverse types of disinformation that circulate in the Americas, according to Tardáguila.

“Over the course of 48 hours of work, journalists will focus on tools, databases, artificial intelligence and many reporting techniques to unravel who paid for so many lies,” she said.

Mentors for the “Investigathon” are giants in the world fighting against disinformation: Claire Wardle, Craig Silverman, Giannina Segnini, Patricia Campos Mello, Laura Zommer and Chris Guess.

On the first day of ISOJ, ICFJ will announce the eight winners of $10,000 grants to carry out their investigations.

“All ‘Investigathon’ participants represent a transnational team that previously agreed to work collaboratively to show that lies have no barriers,” Tardáguila said, adding that more than 30 media from the Americas will be represented.

Cómo las redacciones pueden abordar salud mental y bienestar: taller en ISOJ 2023 con Mar Cabra https://isoj.org/como-las-redacciones-pueden-abordar-salud-mental-y-bienestar-taller-en-isoj-2023-con-mar-cabra/ https://isoj.org/como-las-redacciones-pueden-abordar-salud-mental-y-bienestar-taller-en-isoj-2023-con-mar-cabra/#respond Wed, 05 Apr 2023 22:49:04 +0000 https://isoj.org/?p=18834 Click here to read this article in English.

Twitter Salud Mental Taller

Looking for a way to reach more viewers using the powerful smartphone in your hand? Attendees of the 24th International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ) are invited to register for a workshop on using YouTube Shorts for journalism.

“Shorts for Journalists: How to optimize your news experience and tell your stories on YouTube Shorts” will be taught in English and Spanish during lunch breaks on both days of ISOJ 2023.

YouTube itself has about 2.5 billion monthly active users globally. The online video sharing company created YouTube Shorts, which are vertical videos that are 60 seconds or less and can be made using a cellphone.

“Shorts are a great way to experiment with how news is delivered, including showing behind-the-scenes clips and creating a more open dialogue with viewers,” YouTube says.

Kourtney Bitterly, global news partnerships lead at YouTube, will lead the lunch workshop in English on Friday, April 14, from 12:20 p.m. – 1:10 p.m. Registration is required for in-person attendance and spots are limited.

YouTube Shorts ENG Workshop

José Manuel Tena, strategic partner manager at YouTube, will lead the lunch workshop in Spanish on Saturday, April 15, from 12:20 p.m. – 1:10 p.m. Registration is required for in-person attendance and spots are limited.

Both workshops will be streamed live to ISOJ 2023 remote attendees. You can still register to attend the 24th International Symposium on Online Journalism in person or online. Check out the stellar program and find out how to register at https://isoj.org/symposia/2023/.

ISOJ, which began in 1999, brings together journalists, media executives, scholars and students to discuss the impact of technology on journalism today and in the future. It is an innovative conference that bridges the gap between the news industry and academia.

For updates and additional information, you can visit ISOJ’s websiteTwitter or Facebook. If you have any questions, please contact us at isoj@austin.utexas.edu.
